HIDDEN MIND: ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY & SCULPTURES
This photography exhibit explores the dream-like state of the Hidden Mind. Each image was collected and edited with the idea to illustrate moments that were seen, yet un-seeable while capturing the moment. David Whitaker uses dramatic tone edits and color masking to alter the perception of the document. This is purposeful as an allusion to the way our own recollection and dreams alter our memories of specific events or scenes. David’s abstract images stand as aesthetic expressions of the unconscious perception of what we remember as “seen”.
David’s sculpture work is exhibited as a contrast to the ethereal nature of the photography on display. While each sculpture is abstract in form, the geometric patterns and presence of the metal help ground the space where it is displayed. While not directly representative of the Hidden Mind concept for the exhibition, the sculpture provides a visual anchor point to come back to after drifting with the photography’s abstract flow. David encourages the viewer to use the sculpture a visual cleanse, meant to hold gravity within the gallery and give the show a three-dimensional presence.
Light and Shadow. Color and Contrast. Mass and the Void. This is the Hidden Mind.
– This exhibit is the first time these prints and scultpures are being exhibited.
